Bronte Residents Not Backing Down – May 16

Several residents stayed on site over the course of the evening to prevent the cellular towers from being activated. Residents are coming out in larger numbers since this issue has fallen on deaf  ears by both BELL and the Town of Oakville. Why is the Town of Oakville pushing so hard to get these activated when they are currently asking for public consultation on their telecommunications policy? Bronte residents are asking BELL and the Town of Oakville to do what is right and wait for a decision before Council.

Alcon has apparently once again fenced in residents which is violation against our rights in their attempts to make this a construction zone. See the You Tube videos:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOAwVDrksY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Residents are committed to staying on site until BELL and the Town of Oakville find a resolution.

BELL Canada and Mayor Burton were sent the Bronte Resident petition that was sent several weeks ago which there has no acknowledgement or response. Let Mayor Burton and Bell know that you do not want these cellular tower addition

Bronte Residents Stand up to Bell – May 15th

May 15th was a very interesting day as many Bronte residents came out to prevent the work from being completed on the cellular tower to connect the electricity. We will be posting many videos and photos of yesterdays events as it was an action packed day.

See the You Tube Videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOAwVDrksY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The day become very heated as Alcon placed a construction fence around the residents to try to make this a construction work area . The police asked Alcon to remove since the residents were clearly their first as was proven with video footage. We have videos of how poorly Alcon and BELL handled this situation since they near hit a resident with their work truck. Come on Alcon and BELL, these are MOMS trying to protect children and residents!!!

The residents of Bronte do not want this tower turned on. We have now made our voice loud and clear to BELL and the Town of Oakville.

Residents will remain on site until this issue is resolved.

May Day PicNic – Sunday May 6 at Noon

May Day Picnic : please join us Sunday, May 6th, noon, for a May Day Family Picnic on the grounds of Fire Station #1, corner of Bronte and Rebecca.
We will gather to demonstrate our desire for our community to remain healthy and safe for all: to tell Bell NOT TO TURN THE COMMERCIAL ANTENNA ON. Come out to signal your intent to carry on opposing this new use of the fire station emergency communications antenna. We invite neighbours, friends, and family to join us in visible opposition to the electrosmog pollution that these new antenna would subject us to 24/7.

Bell Canada and the Town of Oakville chose to locate these antenna here, they can choose to relocate them to locations with appropriate setbacks protecting the firefighters, the children in the day care, the churches, school and the residences that are well under the Town of Oakville’s 200 meter set-back protocol. Our people and our community demand better. Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in radio communications. The word derives from the French venez m’aider, meaning “come help me”, and is used by firefighters. The call is always given three times in a row (“Mayday Mayday Mayday”). We invite anyone concerned about the risk of radio frequency radiation to stop by, and urge you to join us in showing your opposition. Bring your family, your picnic and a bright coloured blanket!

  • 95% of respondents are concerned with Radio Wave Frequencies emitted from cellular towers
  • 97% of respondents felt that the Town of Oakville should have consulted local residents about this issue
  • 91% of the respondents were opposed to the cellular tower
  • Many local residents took the time to write comments so their voices can be heard -click here to see resident feedback

Please take the time to let the Mayor and your local Councilors know how you feel about this issue. Click the link to view the abridged version of the Petition: Bronte Residents Petition Against the Bell Cellular Tower Additions – abridged

Bell Plans to Turn Cell Tower ON – May 1st, 2012

It has come to our attention that the electrical work for the tower is completed and Bell Canada intends to light up the cellular tower starting May 1st.

This is a complete disgrace because:

  • Residents are completely opposed and have let Bell and The Town of Oakville aware
  • Bell Canada had no interest in advising the public and is a poor corporate citizen
  • Bell cannot wait until May 12th to see what the Town of Oakville planning guidelines will be
  • Bronte residents will prove that there is a health risk with our epidemiology study.

Residents should share their concerns directly with Mayor Burton: mayor@oavkille.ca, your local Councillor, and Bell Canada – colin.lavery@bell.ca , your local MPP and your local MP. If these cellular Towers concern you, please let them know.

Protect your baby’s health: the dangers of RF radiation while pregnant, and to babies

Scientists are now advising that cell phones are best kept at a distance during pregnancy; to limit hands-free use at any time while pregnant, and to turn cell phones to airport mode or completely off at night. Dr. Oz in the Toronto Star.http://www.theprovince.com/health/Roizen+your+cellphone+safely+while+pregnant/6404699/story.html

Parents are advised not to use a baby monitor unless absolutely necessary and then only for short periods of time. In Europe and elsewhere lower radiation monitors are available, in North America these safer monitors are blocked from the market. They have been linked to autism and other serious issues for newborns. People such as Nobel Laureate Luc Montagnier are stepping out to warn people about EMF as a possible contributing cause of autism, and lots of other health hazards. His point is that too much RF radiation stimulates the bad microbial flora.

“We must consider environmental factors as they have changed considerably our biosphere: infant nutrition, air pollution and pesticides, increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation of all frequencies associated with the globalization of human communication, and changes in our microbial flora”

Here is another report just released from Yale University. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.”  http://news.yale.edu/2012/03/15/cell-phone-use-pregnancy-may-cause-behavioral-disorders-offspring

Residents in Milton Express Anger at Cell Tower Meeting

It is very interesting that politicians and even Chief Medical Officers seem to think that there is no harm from Radio Wave Frequencies, yet citizens from across Canada are concerned and are letting their voices be heard.  More and more resident groups are coming together to take on Goliath ( Cell Phone Companies) as residents are concerned about their safety and they have every right to be.

We have been arguing the ” Precautionary Principle” in Bronte and it continues to fall on deaf ears from politicians and the Chief Medical Officer. Mr. Nosal acknowledges that more studies need to be done, but he cannot disprove with 100% certainty  that residents are not at risk, which begs the question ” why on earth are we taking this gamble when it comes to human life and safety.”

Share your concerns with the Chief Medical Officer, The Mayor and your Councillors since it is apparent they believe there are no apparent health and safety risks.

Click here to read the article on how heated the Milton residents were with Bell. Let Bell know they are not wanted in Bronte.

Bell gets the Boot at 8th Line & Upper Middle

Residents at 8th line and Upper Middle were effective in blocking Bell from adding additional cellular antennae on an existing clock tower. This is a great win for the residents who live in this area. If only Bell would listen to the residents of Bronte who want their cellular antennae out our community.

Let our Councillors and Mayor Burton that these cellular tower additions are not wanted. in Bronte.  The Oakville Beaver did a great job covering this story, click here to read this story.

May 14th, 2012 – Let Council Hear Your Voice

The people of Oakville are becoming aware and starting to ask that we put RF safety first – thank you for doing your part to protect the health and safety of our generation and of our children. The Town has scheduled the postponed meeting on changes to Cell Tower set-backs: Monday, May 14, 2012. The evenings of Tuesday May 15 and Thursday May 17 have also been set aside for the continuation of the meeting, if required, to address the potential of a large number of delegations wishing to speak. Please attend to show Council the people of Oakville want them to respect the precautionary principle and put SAFETY FIRST, not to lower standards, throw up their hands and allow the telecom industry free reign in Oakville. We know better, we can do better, Oakville can take a leadership role in this.

If you feel passionate and want Council to hear your voice, please register by calling Clerk’s office – 905 845-6601 x 4183.

Telecom Industry Convincing People to Put Cell Towers in their Back Yards

On top of Town setbacks, we have recently learned that Telecom Industry Site Acquisition sales people are actively recruiting home-owners to place towers in their yards in Montreal and in some prairie cities! This was in the news this week: http://westislandgazette.com/news/29626#, http://westislandgazette.com/justbetweenus/29693 It is very important that we inform the people of Oakville not to be taken in by the offer of payment (generally around $200/month) in return for this potentially damaging health hazard to you and to your neighbours. This is not a matter of visual appeal or ‘prettiness’ – exposure to on going raised levels of RF radiation is a very real and recognized Class 2B carcinogen.

Town Council Defers Decision on dropping to a 20 meter setback

Thank you to all concerned people who came to let Oakville Town Council know what they thought about the proposed adoption of a 20m setback from the 200m one adopted last fall! they certainly felt our presence and heard us speak, and we thank them for responding by deferring a decision. WE WILL BE SURE TO LET YOU KNOW when this is added to the Planning and Development committee of Council agenda – as soon as it is booked, we will notify you. To read the story from the Oakville Beaver, click here.

Please continue to tell Council the people of Oakville want them to respect the precautionary principle and put SAFETY FIRST, not to lower standards and allow the telecom industry free reign in Oakville. We know better, we can do better, Oakville can take a leadership role in this. Below is a link to the Town staff report – see item #5. Electrosmog and how it can harm your health is important to everyone in Oakville, and may be most urgent for those living around these proposed sites, as well as the Big Bear site at Hopedale:
  • 553 Chartwell Road (freestanding tower)
  • 2410 Bronte Road (freestanding tower)
  • 1355 North Service Road (freestanding tower)

Terrence Young Interview in the Oakville Beaver on Cellular Towers

Hats off to Terrence Young who explained the cellular tower issue in Bronte in a recent interview with the Oakville Beaver. Click here to read this very interesting story.

BELL Canada clearly does not care what residents think about this situation and it is surprising how their competitor Rogers recently backed off at Third Line and Rebecca. It is shameful for Bell to think that the Bronte residents would not be upset at BELL and the Town of Oakville to allow this to happen without proper consultation.  It is amazing that both parties were not prudent.

The heart of the issue is very clear in the Bronte new cellular antennae as stated in the interview with Mr Young ” The Town owns the tower and the property, and Town Council approved the installation in December. To address local concerns, council should reopen the issue at Bronte and withdraw its consent to Bell’s installation”

Let Mayor Burton (mayor@oakville.ca) and your local Councillor know that they need to re-open this issue and also reconsider their new telecommunications guidelines with 20M setbacks that will impact all Oakville residents.

Town of Oakville New Cell Tower Guidelines Can now Impact All Oakville Residents – Oakville Beaver Coverage

The Oakville Beaver posted an excellent article on Mayor Burton once again moving very hastily to make a quick decision on a new cell tower protocol. We are not sure why he is in such a rush these days to get everything through without proper consultation. Residents should be outraged by the fact that he is trying to be push this through so quickly and at a time when many Oakville residents are away on vacation.

These new telecommunication procedures now make it very easy for the widespread proliferation of cellular antennae throughout Oakville. Ask Mayor Burton to defer this item until proper consultation can be done. Email him at mayor@oakville.ca and also let your local councillors know how you feel.

Strong Support today at the Back Off BELL Rally

A number of residents came out this afternoon to protest against these cellular tower additions. There was lots of chanting and increased from residents about the safety of the firefighters and residents. Even the dogs came out to show their support!! To see a brief video of the rally, click here.

The residents are asking BELL to respect a safe distance of 500M from residential areas, schools, daycares and our firefighters.

Where was BELL Canada at the March 1st Meeting?

It was clear and evident that that BELL had no plans to attend the March 1st Community Meeting. Our invitations went unanswered and it was very clear they do not care about the firefighters, children and the very people who purchase their services. By adding cellualr towers in Bronte without informing local residents is not PRUDENT in any way, shape or form. The residents at the March 1st meeting clearly were upset with BELL and how this issue has been handled.

Our Message to BELL Canada is loud and clear:

  • REMOVE YOUR COMMERCIAL CELLULAR TOWER ADDITIONS
  • Uphold the Town Oakville Communication setback protocols
  • Be a Prudent corporate citizen. How is adding these cell tower directly below the firefighters, a daycare, school and many residents without informing them prudent?

A Great Turn-out at the March 1st Community Meeting

:

We had a great community turn-out with over 200 people, the session was taped and will air in full on COGECO, and we were the lead story on CHCH that night and next morning. The hall was completely packed and many residents concerned about their safety as well as the safety of firefighters. Many great questions and a lot of very passionate people – thank you to those who attended. Residents spoke loud and clear: BACK OFF BELL CANADA! Keep safe set-backs!

  1. Kevin Flynn announced that he has launched a petition calling on the federal government to place a moratorium on the installation of cellular transmission equipment on cell towers in residential neighbourhoods until a safe separation distance is established.Click here for his petition.
  2. Terrence Young addressed a letter to all residents who attended the meeting stating that he was working with local Councilors to meet with senior executives at Bell to further discuss the issue. We will get a copy of this letter and post it.
  3. We had town representation from two Councilors who originally voted in favour of these tower additions to hear what residents had to say and listen to research on the dangers of cell towers from Dr. Magda Havas. Thank you Allan Elgar and Roger Lapworth for attending. A big thank you to Max Khan who also attended last evening as well as the original Councilors who voted against these cell tower additions that includes Councillor Robinson, Duddeck, Damoff and Johnston.
  4. Our local Councilor Ralph Robinson answered many resident questions last evening and continues to be a passionate voice to remove the BELL cell tower additions. Keep up the great work Ralph.
  5. We had  phenomenal expertise in guest speaker Dr. Magda Havas who delivered an excellent presentation to help our audience learn more about this important issue. A big thank you to Dr. Havas!!
  6. We had extensive media coverage last evening. Thanks to CHCH news, Oakville Beaver and Cogeco Cable who recorded the entire meeting.

We will share the videos and media coverage as it becomes available.

This was a very positive step forward, but there is still a lot of work ahead of us to get BELL to BACK OFF, the Town to uphold their own setback protocols, and our neighbourhood back to supporting the needs of the Firefighters and the Halton Region Police Service with service on the Tower, not the commercial antennas that Bell Canada surreptitiously  installed.

Kevin Flynn calls on feds for review of cell towers

We were very pleased to see the news that Kevin Flynn is asking residents to help him convince the federal government to take another look at its cell tower policies.Mr. Flynn  announced last week he has launched a petition calling on the federal government to place a moratorium on the installation of cellular transmission equipment on cell towers in residential neighbourhoods until a safe separation distance is established.

Thank you Mr. Flynn for taking this important progressive step forward to keeping our families safe and secure. To print a copy of Mr. Flynn’s peition, click here

President of the Mississauga Fire Fighters Association Concerned About Cell Towers

The president of the Mississauga Fire Fighters Association wrote a letter to Mississauga Town Council expressing concern about plans by the municipality to locate cell towers at City facilities, including fire stations.

We believe that there are established biological effects from exposure to low-level cell tower radiation,” said Chris Varcoe. “Such biological effects may be markers of adverse health effects, similar to biological markers arising from exposure to toxic chemicals. Therefore, we strongly object to placement of cell towers on our fire stations and request that you carefully consider placements for towers on City properties or withhold the decision altogether until the true health effects are known.”

Last month, the City of Missisauga  asked Industry Canada to place a six-month moratorium on the approval of cell phone towers in Mississauga so the federal body can review its requirements for public notification. To view this article, click here.

Bell’s Response to the Tower

One of our volunteers sent an email to Bell ( Letter to Bell), to request that they reconsider the towers at Bronte and Rebecca. Provided below is the form letter response provided by Bell. We have included the contact information below if you wish to address directly with Bell.

From: Jason Laszlo - Corporate Communications
905-614-6602   M. 416-606-4737   T. @Bell_News – email: jason.laszlo@bell.ca
Thank you for your letter regarding our new cell site at the Bronte Road and Rebecca Street fire station.
Bell worked closely with Town of Oakville staff to select a site that would meet the needs of our mobile customers in the region. As with all Bell site installations across Canada, we adhere to all codes and regulations governing cell site construction and operation. The site received the approval of Oakville, the Region of Halton, and Industry Canada.
This site also meets requirements by Industry Canada and municipal governments like Oakville that, wherever possible, communications companies like Bell use existing site structures rather than build new ones.
In this case, Bell equipment was added to an existing structure that has been used for fire and EMS radio communications equipment for some time.
Thank you again for your comments.
Sincerely,
Jason Laszlo

Show your love and support for our firefighters and local Bronte residents

The #1 Question Asked?

The Number One Question asked of our volunteer team is “who on Oakville Town Council was in favour of adding these Bell Cellular antenna’s?”

Gord Lalonde who is Oakville’s Commissioner of Corporate Services recommended to Town Council that this be approved. The Council members who vote in favour of this were:

We are hopeful that when they made this decision they likely were not aware of the major risks to residents and to the firefighters which is why we are hoping they will reconsider this decision. Please watch the video below and then contact any of the individuals above to ask why they voted in favour on these Bell cellular antenna.

If you want to watch the whole Town Hall meeting, take a look at the visity this link at http://www.towntv.ca/111219.htm to see how Council dealt with this issue. Fast forward to the 42 minute mark of the video for the first segment and then

Our Sign Remains Firmly in Place Outside the Bronte Firehall!

Aside

911 – Save Our Fire Fighters!  Over the past couple of days, the local Bronte resident team has been spreading the word about this issue and we have seen some very strong response to the petition. The City Park Department took most of our signs down on the first evening  but left the one in front of the Firehall.  The fact that it remains sends a strong message to the community. We need your help and support to spread the word about this important issue.

Ralph Robinson Organizes Community Meeting for March 1, 2012 at 7pm

Councillor Ralph Robinson of Ward 1 who has been strongly opposed to the added cellular antennas  has organized a public meeting on March 1, 2012 at 7 pm at the Church of the Nazarene locacted at 320 Bronte Road.

Ralph and Councillor Alan Johnston have invited a number of guest speakers. Awaiting confirmation is Mayor Rob Burton,  Town Councillors, Halton Regional Police Service, the Fire Department, Terence Young, Kevin Flynn, other guests and the media.

To educate everyone to the potential dangers of these antenna and power transformers,  Trent university professor Dr. Magda Havas  will present the latest studies and IARC/WHO findings concerning the health effects from over exposure to RF microwave radiation from the cell antennas and the electrical transformers installed beside the firehall. Click here for a outline of the presentation.

It is important for as many local Bronte residents as possible to be in attendance to showcase our support for the firefighters that live and work at the firehall! Be informed about the potential health effects the community will experience from the added cell antenna.

Please confirm your attendance by posting a comment to the blog that you will be attending. Thank you!

Town of Oakville Interim Telecommunications Facilities Protocol

It is very interesting to read through the Town of Oakville’s protocol for telecommunications that was adopted on October 24, 2011. In a span of less than one month after adopting these guidelines that includes items like public consultation and minimum setbacks from residential areas, the Bronte Firehall Bell Tower add-ons are able to easily pass through without public consultation based on a technicality that it is an existing tower.

Clearly somebody needs to explain what is the purpose of allowing Bell cell antennas to be co-located on a Firehall who’s union forbids it.

Council supports call for tougher rules for cell towers

The Town of Oakville supports tougher rule for cell towers on properties that are not owned by the Town, but on their own property, their beliefs are different.
