Resident Feedback Against the Cell Tower Additions

Provided below are responses that have been made by Oakville and Bronte residents. We wanted to share these responses as it is important to showcase how local residents are truly concerned about this issue. To respect confidentiality, we have posted only resident commentary. Please continue to spread the word about this issue as we will be sharing our concerns and responses with Mayor Burton and Council members.

Feedback and Commentary About the Cell Tower Additions

  • I believe the residents have behaved in a responsible manner in responding to the issue of Bell Commercial Cellular Service on the Bronte Emergency Tower. Personally I have great respect for our Mayor and I firmly believe he would not intentionally place residents of the community in harm\’s way. At the same time, as a retired Professor (Professor Emeritus, Ryerson University) and former Chair of the School of Radio and Television Arts, Faculty of Communication and Design, I found the information presented at the March 1 session compelling and disconcerting. With respect, I would ask Mayor Burton to review the research material with care. Further, regarding the actual conduct of the meeting. I was struck by the reasonableness of the speakers and their advice that we should work closely with our Town representatives in a constructive way. This was one of those rare instances when there was more light than heat in the sharing of information. One last thing, I would be willing to participate in any health related survey (pre and post the installation) to determine if there are delterious effects to the placement of the commercial transmitters on the towers. It strikes me that such a collection of data would provide an impartial basis for a class action legal case.
  • Only one word comes to my mind – disgusting.
  • I am shocked that council would pass this without consulting residents. Maybe this speaks to the leaders we have running our city. Possibly worth considering who he vote in next time. I do not live directly where the towers are but I support your push to have these removed at 100 percent.
  • Had the residents been made aware of the tower, I would not have enrolled my daughter in the daycare. The commercial use of the tower has caused me to consider moving out of the area. Mr Burton, if you lived where I do and if you had children attend a daycare directly beside the fire station, would you allow this to continue?
  • I live within a block of the cell tower. My health and that of my husband are already compromised so this is an even greater concern to us. I have 3 young children – 2 of which attend St. Dominic – and after losing a young friend to cancer 3 years ago – had many questions following the resident meeting on March 1st. We are in the process of having full physicals including blood work done to track any changes in our health. We are taking this very seriously.
  • For a town with the demographics and success stories such as Oakville , it is unbelievable that our councilors would give the green light to put us in harms way. I own a local business in Oakville , and can\’t even get a sign out front of my unit to increase exposure, yet Bell can endanger my family with their satellites? It seems to me a blatant disregard for the occupants of Bronte, and human life. Something I never even considered would have to addressed here in Oakville. I trust our mayor and councilors will back track to fix this major error.
  • The health and safety of our children is always a number one priority. If Bell is allowed to use the tower I will be forced to put our house up for sale. I feel this would be a flagrant disregard for the wellbeing of the residents of this area.
  • I am totally against this Bell cellular tower behind a child care centre and so close to the residents. This is putting the Oakville Community at risk when the hospitals are already full with cancer problems, asthma and copd issues.
  • Please don’t do this for our children’s sake!!! It’s bad enough that we as adults make bad decisions, but don\’t make our children live with our bad choices.
  • I believe this is a huge concern, and therefore should not be accepted. It us unacceptable to put lives at risk for the sake of a cellphone tower. Why can it be not put into petro Canada land is?
  • this is unacceptable
  • I can’t believe that a $37,000 dollar a year \”tax saving\” for the Town of Oakville outweighs the lack of concern the town has for the citizens of the Bronte Community. Shame on you!!!!!!
  • St. Dominic’s Elementary is within the 500m danger zone. Students should not be exposed to that.
  • he is elected by the public to work on our behalf and is obviously not listening. if the town has no concerns about the installation and its effects maybe they should buy our homes or make up the difference in our homes devaluation. we live within 100 yards of the tower. this solution is a lot more costly than the 36000.00 savings by installing behind the firehall and affecting peoples lives, which certainly comes ahead of financial savings
  • Our family has been in similar circumstances with power lines and alike … There is no doubt in my mind that these towers emit dangerous energy and can be harmful to those in close proximity … It is shameful that in an area of high density population of families that they chose not to work with the community. Show me any study that firmly gives the green light to these towers and that there are not issues at all short or long term? I ask every politician if they would like this in their back yard ..
  • I am VERY upset that the residents were not informed of this cell tower. My kids go to St. Dominics and play outside three times a day- their health is at risk and you have made a whole part of your town VERY ANGRY. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL…
  • Why can’t the tower be moved out of the residential areas and put them somewhere in the industrial/commercial?
  • This is a prime example of voted politicians not working in favour of all their constituents. Shame on you !!!!!!!!!!!
  • These eyesores that are potentially hazardous to our children’s health should not be located near residential areas and particularly not near an elementary school. I have four children under the age of 11 that attend St. Dominic\’s school just east of Bronte Rd. on Rebecca and I am concerned about the effects these towers may have on their growing bodies. Shame on you Mayor Burton for allowing these towers to be erected before hearing from the majority of your constituents who are vehemently opposed to this action.
  • Our children attend St. Dominic Elementary School. The cell tower is dangerously close to hundreds of children who play outdoors every day.
  • I am extremely concerned for my 11 month old boy, my wife and myself, we live about 300 meters from the fire station. We have just purchased our first home and would enjoy living here in good health. Please allows us to do so and remove the commercial cellular towers.
  • We would like a fair and full review of the issue with significant public consultation carried out. We do not support the commercial cellular service on the Bronte tower.
  • Please do not let this go forward. We moved to Bronte just under two years ago and I have many serious medical issues that I’m just starting to get under control. The people of Bronte are health conscious and Oakville & Bronte, in my opinion, promote a healthy lifestyle. We were excited to live in such a great community but this will rob us of that peaceful feeling we have coming home each day. The opinion of the tax paying residents of Bronte should be heard and should matter!
  • Based on this information, it certainly appears that the decision-makers do not care about the health and well-being of their citizens in Bronte. This is very disturbing. I have lived in Bronte for 14 years and, up until now, I thought that it was a very safe and beautiful place to live. Based on this change, I will be looking for another place to live.
  • We are shocked that we did not have the opportunity to attend the town meeting regarding the Bell cell services being installed on the tower at Bronte fire station. We cannot have these services installed near our fire fighters or in a residential area in Oakville. What is your office thinking! Where do you live in Oakville? My guess is not in Bronte. I also wonder where the police chief lives.
  • I am furious with Bell putting the lives of our children at risk not to mention bombarding those poor firefighters that have to live there 10m away from blasting radiation through their entire working day. This is callous behavior from a heartless corporation. Bell, what is wrong with the 800+ acres of empty field right next door barely used by Suncore? Is it a little cheaper to lobby the city than to pay some rent for a safer distance from the community? Your excuses about staying within Canadian laws is the same overused tactic by every legal department trying to hide and evade…as long as it\’s not in your back yard right Laszlo? Mayor Burton, have you missed what is going on in Mississauga? The leadership there seems to believe in a safe community and won\’t risk lives approving questionable technology, especially if it can cause cancer! I moved to Oakville because I thought it was a safe place to raise my children. Thanks Bell, Burton, and all the rest of you responsible. It will be too late for anyone living in close proximity now when they are dying in a hospital in 10 years. By then the Bell lawyers will have a dozen other reasons they can pin the cancer on and it won\’t be them, oh no. Again, the innocent citizens have to pay cost imposed on them by a corporation. Just externalities passed down to us. I wish there was more I could do than just tell everyone I know I think they should get away from Bell. So I want the mayor to be a hero here and straighten this out like he did the last major issue we had with the power plant. This is the same devil in a different form, please don’t listen to the Bell lobbyists, they don\’t care about us.
  • No previous knowledge that tower housed commercial cell capabilities (bell) until we received a letter from local bronte residents explaining the situation…never did we receive any information from the town of oakville!!! Where were the public meetings? Evidently a sickly environment is better than a healthy community in the eyes of the council!
  • I oppose this decision. Will not agree ever!! Have been studying this subject at school!
  • St. Dominic’s Elementary is within the 500m danger zone. Students should not be exposed to that.
  • He is elected by the public to work on our behalf and is obviously not listening. if the town has no concerns about the installation and its effects maybe they should buy our homes or make up the difference in our homes devaluation. we live within 100 yards of the tower. this solution is a lot more costly than the 36,000 savings by installing behind the firehall and affecting peoples lives, which certainly comes ahead of financial savings
I ask every politician if they would like this in their back yard …
  • This was very sneaky how Council passed this without Input from Bonte Members
  •  I am very concerned about the health and safety of my children and for local residents
  • We are 100m away from the Tower! My kids ask me if they are in danger! We are all concerned about our longterm health. If one person develops cancer, wouldn’t it be cheaper on our healthcare system for the police to pay for tower use from their other option. This doesn\’t make sense to us. It should be a simple solution that puts our safety first! We need to look at other options for radio use. This isn\’t a good solution.
  • This is an action taken without regard to your ethical obligation to this town and it\’s people. I am now seriously considering selling my home in this area, an act that your decision has had a profound effect on.
  • Safety for residents first!
  • I would like to know about this. I haven’t seen any information in the Beaver or elsewhere. Why has it not been made public? I will be forwarding this onto to EVERY Bronte citizen whose email address I have.
  • I am disappointed in the Town of Oakville. This matter was not handled properly from the beginning. The Town still has the opportunity to make the right decision for everyone in the “community sensitive” area. The tower should be relocated to an area that follows the Towns telecommunications protocol and “co locate” on the tower near Speers and Bronte.
  • It is scandalous the way this was carried out by council, four days before Christmas and with no public consultation whatsoever. Residents were strongly opposed to the Rogers tower recently. Council should not have used modification of a tower vs. building a new tower as an excuse to not consult with residents.
  • It is not your choice for my children and myselfs health
  • Does the mayor have one near his home???
  • Surely a more suitable location can be found in our lovely town of Oakville to erect a tower, why of all locations here? Perhaps the key questions to ask the mayor and all the counsillors are, “Could you honestly erect a tower like this just down the very end of your own street without any concern? What would your family members, friends and neighbours say if such a tower was erected in your poshy neighbourhood”? Please, give me a break, you know very well everyone in your neighbourhood would oppose such an action. Put the tower in a place where EVERYONE is happy!! Have you not learned from the Generation Power Plant fiasco?
  • It is disgusting that the local residents were never consulted and totally unethical to put us and our families at risk. I am sure this would never happen in the neighbourhoods of those politician’s who voted for this!!
  • Very disappointed.
  • It upsets me to end that you and council can arbitrarly decide to chang the rules on a whim without public consultation. Do you really care about Oakville residents or not?
  •  I RECENTLY MOVED TO THE AREA. AS ANY NORAM INDIVIDUAL WHO WANTS TO PROTECT HIS/HER HEALTH AND HIS/HER FAMILY I WILL OPPOSE TO ANY ENVIROMENTAL HAZARD THAT CAN AFFECT MY FAMILY WELL-BEING
  • Our childrens health is our #1 priority. We should have been notified of this issue! We have our rights to petition against this, and have our children live in a safe neighborhood! This is going to affect the health of our innocent children. This needs to stop!
  • Our health and lives are more important than money
  • I have 3 kids one with special needs, i shouldn’t have to worry about this as well!
  • Mayor Burton, I urge you and your council to uphold the intent of the Town protocol and rescind the use of these towers for commercial purposes.
  • This is appalling. How can you alow this kind of dangerous exposure be allowed to take place in our backyards, close to schools and a large community? This is not acceptable and WE expect this should NOT be completed! Think of our children and their future.
  • I don’t know why there was no public consultation/meeting like the ones held in the Third Line and Rebecca area. This tower is no different (other than instead of Rogers, it is Bell) but, it is in a residential area. The fact that it was previously used for emergencies before does not justify passing a motion that will afect us all without even letting us know.
  • When the tower was initially erected we were told that it would never be used for commercial use. We have been misled.
  • My wife is the person who spotted these commercial antenna\’s being put up. After her direct involvement with this issue and speaking to Oakville Town Council in an appeal to have the antennae removed, (before the vote was passed to allow them), I was amazed that this was passed by Oakville Town Council. After doing some preliminary research on the side effects of long term exposure to the radiation that is emitted from 4G antennae, I truly hope that City Council will take the opportunity to educate themselves and reverse their previous decision and have these removed for the health and safety of our community. Hope is not enough however and we need support. Everyone who see\’s and hears about this happening should know that this could happen in their community because of a loop hole which allows for modification to existing towers, even if they are not designated for commercial use.
  • Decisions that affect the community require prior consultation with the constituents.
  •  Considering we just said no to the rogers tower. The town of Oakville has no right to approve this. What a waste of the towns money to make us go through all of this again . I don’t suport bell I have one of their services do I don’t care if there network drops. I would rather have a dropping cell phone conection then cancer!!
  • I find it interesting that we were not consulted, in fact I had no idea that this was an issue. I am extremely disappointed with the towns decision. This is another example of all things that are not wanted elsewhere in Oakville seem to end up in Bronte.
  • Mayor Burton have you really sat down and actually read the health and safety concerns involved with installing these commercial cellular towers? Would you feel safe for yourself and family living in an area where these towers are emitting these RWF? Is technology worth all of our lives?
  • There are a lot of families with young children living within the effected area. One thing I have always loved about living in Oakville is how much importance and emphasis has been placed on the family unit. I sincerely hope Mayor Burton and all other officials with authority will respect those values and protect all of the families in this area. I am sending my first born son to St. Dominic’s School in September. I am nervous and excited to send my first born to school for the first time. I hope I only need to be concerned about how he will adjust and not whether he’s being exposed to radiation.
  •  As a father of 2 kids (2 and 5) who lives in Lakeshore Woods area…I\’m greatly concerned about this development and its impact on the health of my family. The way this was handled by the city of Oakville is a complete disgrace.
  • A wilful disregard to the welfare and saftey of the residents. This has got to be stopped! Looks to me like St. Dominic’s School falls in the 500 metre danger zone
  • Why doesn’t it be re-located north of the QEW. That district gets everything else, new schools, parks, rec. centres let them have this too.
  • Please review and and cancel this intention. If you really want a cell tower, be free to install in your own backyard.
  • It is unfortunate that the decision to allow Bell to install their equipment without neighbourhood consultation given that the construction of a cell tower at 3rd Line & Rebecca was cancelled. I trust that the mayor and council will realize this was an error and will have Bell remove the equipment.
  • I think that putting residents in harm’s way with cell phone towers without having their consent (ESPECIALLY then!) is ludicrous! We are a society that pays taxes and is supposed to have a say in the things that go on, especially when they affect our health, in our immediate environment. As a local tax-paying citizen who wants to have children in the near future, I would consider moving away if one went up in our neighbourhood, and the long-term effects that you will see in the people in this Bronte neighbourhood from immediate and continual radiation is appalling. I am 100% opposed to cell phone towers in residential areas!
  • Dear Rob Burton, It is truly sad when politicians are still making back room deals with large business in order to increase town revenues at the expense of their own citizens. I am appalled that you are part of this and saddened that I voted for you. Your position and town revenues are based on tax paying citizens, how can you collect from the sick or dead. By the way, we will only be hurting our health care system by burdening it with needless illness due to the placement of cell towers. We are supposed to be a progressive country and yet we are falling short of other countries.
  • As a resident of Bronte with 2 children under the age of 3 I am opposed to this initiative and want this to be stopped now!
  • I have young children and studies are showing the risk associated with RWF and the real possibility of cancer. This is not what I want for my children and am strongly opposed to this matter. The very fact that this was presented without any community input is alarming and offensive.
  • Mr. Mayor, Why didn’t your past experience fighting the proposed power plant teach you to have your staff look into the negative effects of technology on the local public BEFORE you agree to allow companies to install it? It is hard to believe that your poor judgment and lack of due diligence will AGAIN cost the residents of Oakville money to fight to clean up your mess! Ridiculous!
  • See you at the meeting!!!! Are our families, children, babies, friends , neighbors and people who work in area, lifes just as important as the rest of Oakville ? Is this decision of yours \”What they (people in area) don’t know won’t hurt them” why were we not informed??? loophole?? what about just respect for all your people that you represent and theirs lives…or did we elect big business to rule us and play G__?
  • I have a newborn son and am very concerned about the health risks to my family, as I was not made aware of this tower. I always felt that this was a safe, healthy and family orientated town…. do I now have to rethink where I have to raise my family?
  • We have deep concerns as we have a clear view of the tower from our windows. We are new residents to Bronte and not impressed how this has been handled by the Town of Oakville. Since moving in we were told it\’s purpose was for Emergency Use only. We want it to stay that way.
  • Very concerned about this proposal and we are certainly not for it. How about putting the tower somewhere in Lake Ontario or at least not in a residential neighbourhood (our children attend St Dominics)? This is not in line with trying to be the “Most Liveable City” in Canada!
  • I have family there that’s very concerned so therefore I’m concerned!!
  • The Mayor is fully aware of the potential dangers of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation, as we did not rest until we were certain that he and the Town Council did know! Whether or not they choose to believe the declarations of Health Canada and The World Health Organization, is their decision. But as our elected officials, to dismiss these declarations and abandon our newly developed protocol and potentially place our residents at risk to save a few bucks they could easily find somewhere else is shameful.   The Town should not be volunteering Town property in residential neighbourhoods for this purpose. Why would a Town work so hard for so long on a new protocol, just to turn around and violate it?   Why would the protocol ask for setbacks of any distance if those we elected to run this town did not believe that there is a potential health risk to this type of radiation exposure? Ward 1 and Ward 2 coun cillors are behaving as informed and concerned leaders should. That is, standing up for what is right and safe. What is wrong with this picture? What is going on that we are unaware of at the Town? The possibility of health risk is real. The WHO and Health Canada are finally admitting that this type of radiation may cause cancer. Cell antennas are exposing people to chronic low levels of radiation and the non-government funded research indicates the ill effects from this type of exposure. I am ashamed of the Town’s decision. I am embarrassed for the Town. Inviting Bell to put up an array of antenna in a residential neighbourhood after creating a somewhat reasonable, and yet still lacking, protocol makes the key players (from the Town) in this deal look like a ridiculous bunch of boobs as far as I’m concerned and I am embarrassed for their behaviour because clearly they don’t understand their own protocol, once again!
  • I am VERY concerned about the health of the students that attend St. Dominic. The children and staff are there anywhere form 6-8 hours 5 days a week for 10 months. The school\’s location is extremly close to the location of these new towers. As well, my house is approx 500 meters away! Not happy with the back door approach to getting these towers put up.
  • Mayor, this is disappointing. After the Hopedale Mall incident you promised to consult with your community before deciding on matters that will impact us. I trust that you will swiftly do what is necessary to correct the situation.
  • If it was in his back yard, I wonder if they would have an issue with it? I suppose their thinking is better to safe money then our children. I can alway claim ignorance when problems arise. It\’s not my kids or grand kids so…………
  • Please stop the stop the Bronte Cell Tower from being finalized at any Fire Station in Oakville especially close to residential areas that would be affected by RWF.
  • My daughter and granddaughter live to close to this tower and i am very concerned about their health and well being. This tower should be removed immediately.
  • My three young children attend St. Dominics school, which is within 500 metres of the fire station, and I am very concerned about this issue. Furthermore, I think the process by which this decision was made is absolutely shameful. I\’ve read all the information on the potential health risks and cannot believe this is being allowed. Mayor Burton, when you were first seeking to be the Mayor of our Town many years ago you came out in full support of the fight against the building of the condos south of Lakeshore Woods (which posed no health or safety risks to nearby residents), but on this highly important issue you voted to allow the towers to be used commercially by Bell, surely knowing the long term risks of neoplasia? We are talking CANCER – do you want that blood on your hands? You need to do something to change this NOW – if not, you will have lost my confidence, and most certainly my vote in the next election.
